Diabetes Mental Health

Living with Type 1 Diabetes often feels like navigating through a never-ending series of experiments. Despite diligently following doctor’s orders, meticulously managing exercise, carb intake, and insulin dosages, each day brings its own set of unpredictable outcomes. It’s a relentless cycle of trial and error that can leave one feeling exhausted and disheartened. This constant uncertainty can chip away at motivation and lead to feelings of hopelessness.

For those living with T1D, every decision becomes a calculated risk. It’s not just about what to eat or how much insulin to inject; it’s about navigating a complex web of variables that can impact blood sugar levels in ways that seem almost capricious. You can meticulously count carbs, adjust insulin doses, and monitor your activity levels, yet still find yourself grappling with inexplicable fluctuations in glucose levels.

The emotional toll of this constant uncertainty cannot be overstated. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, ranging from frustration and despair to moments of triumph and resilience. There are days when you feel like you’re winning the battle, and then there are days when it feels like diabetes has the upper hand. It’s a never-ending cycle of trial and error, with no clear endpoint in sight.

But amidst the challenges, there is also resilience and hope. People living with T1D learn to adapt and persevere, drawing strength from their own experiences and the support of their loved ones. They become experts in self-care, mastering the art of balancing blood sugar levels while juggling the demands of everyday life.

So, yes, living with Type 1 Diabetes may feel like an endless series of experiments, but it’s also a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It’s about finding strength in the face of adversity and refusing to let a chronic illness define who you are. And with the right support system in place, there’s no challenge too great to overcome.

I’m Shoshana Ort, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who intimately understands the challenges of T1D, having lived with it since the age of 2. In our sessions I offer empathy, as well as a source of emotional support and understanding that can help individuals find the strength to persevere in their diabetes management journey. My insight and encouragement offer a beacon of hope, empowering individuals to push forward despite the daily obstacles they face.
